Chac-Mool Dec 6 at 6:30 PM. Part of the NEA-sponsored "Big Read Big Show".
I was asked to write a short English-language script based on Carlos Fuentes’ “Chac-Mool.” In this story, a Mexican collector purchases a life-size statue of the indigenous rain god Chac-Mool, only to have the statue gradually come to life and drive him away, taking over his home and identity.
Hola!
As I was pondering the meaning of Thanksgiving and my birthday last week, I especially felt deep gratitude for my three beautiful fulfilled children, each using their special gifts in great ways. I sure had a unique creative role in “birthing” these three wonderful human beings.
Then I thought of “Alegrías y lágrimas,” performed so movingly at the Raven last month. I already have two new interviews for the play as a result, and some good future possibilities for performances.
I give thanks for “birthing” all my other plays, stories, and novels. At this moment, my novel “Los cálices vacíos (The Empty Chalices) is being read by prison inmates in Pamplona, Spain! My short stories and plays for children continue to be read around the world—check out all the different languages when you google my name. I feel so rich in human connection and creativity. “Imagine all the people…”
I have a very fun little play coming up at the Raven on Dec. 6, at 6:30 PM. As part of the NEA-sponsored Big Read Big Show, I was asked to write a short English-language script based on Carlos Fuentes’ “Chac-Mool.” In this story, a Mexican collector purchases a life-size statue of the indigenous rain god Chac-Mool, only to have the statue gradually come to life and drive him away, taking over his home and identity. One night I dreamt about the story, woke up at 4 AM, and wrote the script. Frightening? No, it’s fun! As a woman I identify with the down-trodden reclaiming their power! Four of my ESL students from Centro Romero are performing it as part of a larger showcase.
If you can, come to the Big Read Big Show! Next month look here for video clips from Chac-Mool—made possible by a very generous friend.
Finally, I give thanks for so many supportive friends and family members—you know who you are! Que Dios los bendiga (or as Dickens said in English, God bless you every one!)
